Braided crochet pumpkins are adorable fall decorations that you can create using crochet techniques. They add a cozy and festive touch to your home during the autumn season. Here’s a basic guide to making braided crochet pumpkins:
Materials you’ll need:
- Worsted weight yarn in pumpkin colors (orange, brown, green)
- Crochet hook suitable for your yarn weight
- Fiberfill or stuffing material
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Begin with the pumpkin base:
- Start with the magic ring or create a slip knot and chain 2.
- Make 6 single crochet stitches (sc) into the magic ring or the second chain from the hook.
- Pull the yarn tail to tighten the ring and join with a slip stitch (sl st) to the first sc.
- Increase the size of the pumpkin base:
- Chain 1 to start the next round.
- Work 2 sc stitches into each stitch around.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Continue increasing:
- Chain 1 to start the next round.
- Work 2 sc stitches into the next stitch, then 1 sc into the next stitch.
- Repeat from * to * around.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Repeat step 3 until your pumpkin reaches the desired size. Remember to stuff the pumpkin as you go, using fiberfill or your chosen stuffing material. This will give your pumpkin a plump shape.
- Close the top of the pumpkin:
- Chain 1 to start the next round.
- Single crochet 2 stitches together (sc2tog), then 1 sc into the next stitch.
- Repeat from * to * around.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Fasten off and weave in the loose end with a yarn needle.
- Make the pumpkin stem:
- With green yarn, create a slip knot and chain a short length (about 10 chains).
- Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.
- Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
- Assembly:
- Take the stem and sew it onto the closed top of the pumpkin using the long tail left from the previous step. Make sure it’s securely attached.
- Braiding:
- Cut three long strands of brown yarn (around 3-4 times the length you want the braid to be).
- Tie a knot at one end of the strands and secure it.
- Braid the three strands together until you reach the end.
- Tie another knot at the end to secure the braid.
- Attach the braid:
- Sew the braided strand around the circumference of the pumpkin, a little below the stem, using a yarn needle.
- Make sure to sew it tightly, so it holds the shape of the pumpkin.
- Finishing touches:
- Fluff the pumpkin and shape it as desired.
- Trim any excess yarn if necessary.
