Materials you’ll need:
Worsted weight yarn or a yarn of your choice
Crochet hook suitable for your chosen yarn weight
Scissors
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Instructions:
Start by making a slipknot with your yarn and then create a foundation chain. The length of the chain will depend on the circumference of the head you’re making the hat for. You can measure the head or refer to a standard sizing chart.
Once you have your foundation chain, join it into a circle by slip stitching into the first chain.
Begin the first round by working single crochet stitches into each chain of the foundation chain. This will establish the base of the hat.
For subsequent rounds, continue working single crochet stitches in a spiral, without joining at the end of each round. This will create the cylindrical shape of the hat. Keep crocheting until you reach the desired length for the hat.
To create the rope-like texture, you can use a stitch pattern like the twisted single crochet (also known as the single crochet front post/back post stitch). This stitch creates a raised spiral effect.
To work the twisted single crochet stitch, insert your hook from the front to the back around the post of the single crochet stitch in the previous round, then complete the single crochet as usual. This will twist the stitch and create the rope-like texture.
Continue working the twisted single crochet stitch in a spiral for the remaining rounds of the hat. Remember to maintain the stitch count and increase or decrease stitches as needed to maintain the desired circumference.
Once you’ve reached the desired length of the hat, fasten off your yarn, leaving a long tail for finishing.
Using a tapestry needle, weave in the loose ends of the yarn to secure them.
