Basic Crochet Beanie Pattern:

Note: This pattern uses US crochet terminology.

Round 1: Magic ring, ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), work 10 sc into the ring. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (10 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (20 sts)

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st – repeat around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (30 sts)

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st – repeat around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (40 sts)

Continue increasing in this manner until the circle measures the circumference of the head you’re making the beanie for. For an adult-sized beanie, you’ll typically work about 7-9 rounds of increasing.

After reaching the desired circumference:

Rounds 5 onwards: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Repeat this round until the hat reaches the desired length.

Fasten off and weave in any remaining ends.

How to Incorporate a Graphed Design:

To add a graphed design to the beanie, you can use the technique of tapestry crochet. Here’s how:

Find or create a graph/chart of the design you want to add to the beanie. Each square on the graph represents one stitch.

Decide on the placement of the design on the beanie. You can add the design to the body of the beanie, starting from the brim and working upwards, or you can add it as a band around the middle of the hat.

Start the beanie following the basic beanie pattern above until you reach the round where you want to start the graphed design.

With the main color, work the first stitch of the round. Before completing the stitch, pick up the contrast color and work over it as you yarn over and pull through to finish the stitch. You will now be working with the contrast color for the design.

Continue following the graph/chart, changing colors as needed for each stitch to create the design.

When you finish the last stitch of the graphed design round, drop the contrast color and pick up the main color again to continue the rest of the beanie.

Work the remaining rounds of the beanie in the main color.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
