Materials you’ll need:
Worsted weight yarn in your preferred color
Appropriate crochet hook size for the yarn (usually a G/4.0mm or H/5.0mm hook)
Scissors
Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Stitch marker (optional)
Pattern:
Note: This pattern is for a basic beanie that fits most newborns to 3-month-old babies. You can adjust the size by using a different yarn weight and hook size.
Step 1: Starting Magic Ring
Make a magic ring by wrapping the yarn around your fingers twice, creating a cross. Insert your hook under the first strand, grab the second strand with your hook, and pull it under the first strand, forming a loop on your hook. Then chain 2.
Step 2: Work the crown
Round 1: Make 10 double crochet (dc) stitches into the magic ring. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first dc.
Note: Place a stitch marker in the first stitch to mark the beginning of each round.
Round 2: Chain 2. Make 2 dc stitches in each stitch around. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first dc. (20 stitches)
Round 3: Chain 2. 1 dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch Repeat from * to * around. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first dc. (30 stitches)
Round 4: Chain 2. 1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch Repeat from * to * around. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first dc. (40 stitches)
Step 3: Work the body
Rounds 5-11: Chain 2. Make 1 dc in each stitch around. Close each round with a slip stitch in the first dc. (40 stitches)
Note: You can adjust the number of rounds here to make the beanie shorter or longer, depending on the desired length.
Step 4: Finish the beanie
Round 12: Chain 1. Make 1 single crochet (sc) in each stitch around. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first sc. (40 stitches)
Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing.
Step 5: Finishing touches
Thread the yarn tail into a yarn needle and weave it through the stitches of the last round. Pull tight to close the hole at the top of the beanie. Secure and weave in the loose ends.
