Begin by making a slipknot and chaining 3 stitches. Join the last chain to the first with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: Chain 2 (counts as first half double crochet here and throughout), and work 9 more half double crochets into the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-2. (Total: 10 half double crochets)
Round 2: Chain 2, and work 2 half double crochets in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-2. (Total: 20 half double crochets)
Round 3: Chain 2, 1 half double crochet in the next stitch, 2 half double crochets in the following stitch—repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-2. (Total: 30 half double crochets)
Round 4: Chain 2, 1 half double crochet in the next 2 stitches, 2 half double crochets in the following stitch—repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-2. (Total: 40 half double crochets)
Rounds 5-14: Chain 2, and work 1 half double crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-2. (Total: 40 half double crochets)
Note: You can adjust the number of rounds to make the hat taller or shorter, depending on your preference.
Round 15: Chain 1, and work 1 single crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
Round 16: Chain 1, and work 1 single crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
Fasten off the yarn, leaving a tail. Thread the tail through the yarn needle, and weave it through the stitches of the last round to close the top of the hat.
Bobbles: Cut a long strand of yarn and fold it in half. Attach the yarn to the hat at the desired location for the bobble. Insert the hook through the stitch, pull the yarn through to create a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tighten to secure the bobble. Repeat this step to add more bobbles as desired.
Weave in any loose ends and trim excess yarn.
