Instructions:
Gauge: Start by creating a gauge swatch to ensure that your hat will fit properly. Crochet a 4×4 inch (10×10 cm) swatch using the brioche stitch pattern below. Measure the number of stitches and rows in the swatch to determine your gauge. Adjust your hook size if necessary to match the gauge.
Brioche stitch pattern: The brioche stitch pattern consists of two rows, the setup row and the main row.
Setup Row (color A): Ch an even number of sts.
Main Row:
(Color A): Yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops Repeat from * to * across.
(Color B): Ch 1, yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops Repeat from * to * across.
Hat pattern:
With color A, ch an even number of stitches to achieve the desired circumference of the hat. Join the last ch with the first ch using a slip stitch to form a ring. Be careful not to twist the chain.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, join with a slip stitch to the first sc. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch to mark the beginning of the round.
Round 2: Switch to the brioche stitch pattern. Work the setup row in color A.
Rounds 3-4: Switch to the brioche stitch pattern. Alternate between color A and color B for the main row.
Repeat rounds 3-4 until the hat reaches your desired length, ending with a round in color A.
Finishing:
Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through a yarn needle.
Working from the inside of the hat, weave the yarn tail through the stitches of the last round. Pull tight to close the top of the hat.
Weave in any remaining yarn tails using a yarn needle.
Your brioche hat is complete!
