Instructions:
Base of the Basket:
Start with a magic ring, or ch 4 and join with a sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), work 6 sc into the ring. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (6 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (12 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st – repeat around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (18 sts)
Round 4: Ch 1, sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st – repeat around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (24 sts)
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st – repeat around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (30 sts)
Continue increasing in this manner until the base of the basket reaches your desired size. For example, you can continue increasing until you have 48 sts in the last round for a larger base.
Sides of the Basket:
Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Repeat this round until the basket’s sides reach the desired height. For a typical basket, you may work about 10-15 rounds of sc stitches.
Optional Handles:
Decide where you want the handles to be on your basket.
Count a certain number of stitches in from one side of the basket and attach the yarn.
Ch 1, work 1 sc in each of the next few stitches (the number of stitches you choose will determine the handle’s width). Turn.
Continue working sc rows back and forth in the handle space until it reaches the desired length. Turn.
Ch 1, sc across the handle. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Repeat steps 2-5 for the second handle on the opposite side of the basket.
