Materials:
Worsted weight yarn (or any yarn of your choice)
Crochet hook (size will depend on the yarn weight you’re using)
Yarn needle
Scissors
Pattern:
Start by making a slipknot and then chain the desired number of stitches for the circumference of your hat. For an average adult size, you can start with about 70-80 chains. Join the last chain to the first chain with a slip stitch to form a ring. Be careful not to twist the chain.
Round 1: Chain 2 (this will count as your first double crochet throughout the pattern). Work one double crochet stitch in each chain around the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain-2. (Total number of stitches will be the same as the number of chains you started with.)
Rounds 2-4: Chain 2. Work one double crochet stitch in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain-2.
Round 5: Chain 2. Work one double crochet in the next two stitches, then work two double crochet stitches in the following stitch. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain-2. (This round increases the stitch count.)
Rounds 6-9: Chain 2. Work one double crochet stitch in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain-2.
Repeat Rounds 5-9: Continue repeating Rounds 5-9 until your hat reaches the desired height. You can adjust the number of increase rounds (Round 5) and straight rounds (Rounds 6-9) to customize the fit and style of your hat.
Decrease Rounds: To shape the crown of the hat, you’ll need to start decreasing the stitches. Here’s how you can do it:
Round 1: Chain 1. Single crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
Round 2: Chain 1. Single crochet in the next stitch, then decrease the next two stitches into one stitch. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
Round 3: Chain 1. Decrease in every two stitches around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
Continue with the decrease rounds, working one less decrease round each time, until you have only a few stitches left.
Finishing: Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the yarn tail through a yarn needle. Insert the needle through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat. Weave in any loose ends.
