Materials:
Worsted weight yarn
Crochet hook appropriate for the yarn weight
Stitch marker
Yarn needle
Scissors
Instructions:
Start by making a slip knot and chaining an even number of stitches. The number of chains will depend on the desired circumference of the hat. You can use a size H/8 (5mm) crochet hook for worsted weight yarn.
Join the last chain to the first chain with a slip stitch to form a circle. Be careful not to twist the chain.
Round 1: Chain 2 (counts as the first half double crochet), then work a half double crochet (hdc) into each chain around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain 2. Place a stitch marker in the last stitch of this round to mark the beginning of each round.
Round 2: Chain 2, then work a front post double crochet (fpdc) around the next stitch. Alternate between front post double crochet and back post double crochet (bpdc) stitches in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain 2.
Repeat Round 2 for the desired length of the hat. This will create the ribbed pattern. You can try it on periodically to check the fit and adjust accordingly.
Once you’ve reached the desired length, fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail. Cut the yarn and thread the tail through a yarn needle.
Thread the yarn needle through the front loops of each stitch in the last round. Pull tight to close the top of the hat.
Turn the hat inside out and weave in any loose ends using the yarn needle.
Your crochet rib hat is now complete! You can add a pom-pom or any other embellishments if desired.
