Note: The following instructions assume you have basic knowledge of crochet stitches like single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), and slip stitch (sl st).
Pattern:
Begin by making a slipknot and chaining a multiple of 4 stitches, plus 2 additional stitches for turning. This will ensure the ribbing pattern.
Row 1: Skip the first 2 chain stitches, then work 1 sc in each chain across the row. Turn your work.
Row 2: Chain 2 (counts as the first dc), front post double crochet (fpdc) around the next stitch, back post double crochet (bpdc) around the next stitch. Repeat the * to * pattern across the row until the last two stitches. End the row with 1 dc in the last stitch. Turn your work.
Row 3: Chain 1 (counts as the first sc), fpdc around the next stitch, bpdc around the next stitch. Repeat the * to * pattern across the row until the last stitch. End the row with 1 sc in the last stitch. Turn your work.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your hat reaches the desired length. Make sure to end on a row 3 repeat.
Once your hat is the desired length, fold the ribbing in half, with right sides facing each other. Join the two ends of the ribbing by slip stitching through both loops of the corresponding stitches from the first and last rows. This will create a tube shape for your hat.
From this point on, you’ll be working in the round. Begin by chaining 1 and single crocheting evenly around the top edge of the ribbing. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch to mark the beginning of the round.
Continue working in rounds of single crochet until your hat reaches the desired height. You can adjust the number of rounds depending on the fit you prefer.
When your hat is the desired height, fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the yarn tail onto a yarn needle and weave it through the stitches of the last round. Cinch the top of the hat closed by pulling the yarn tight, then secure it by sewing through a few stitches. Fasten off and weave in any remaining yarn ends.
