Here’s a pattern for a ribbed hat using crochet:
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn
- Crochet hook suitable for the yarn
- Stitch marker
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Pattern:
Note: This pattern uses US crochet terminology.
- Start by making a slip knot and chain the desired number of stitches to achieve the circumference of the hat band. Make sure the chain is a multiple of 2.
- Join the chain with a slip stitch to form a ring, being careful not to twist the chain.
- Round 1: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch), work 1 single crochet (sc) in each chain around. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round. (Total stitches should match the number of chains made in step 1.)
- Rounds 2-5: Chain 1, work 1 front post double crochet (fpdc) around the next stitch, work 1 back post double crochet (bpdc) around the next stitch. Repeat fpdc, bpdc around. Join with a slip stitch to the first fpdc.
- Repeat Rounds 2-5 until the hat measures the desired length. You can adjust the number of rounds to achieve your desired height.
- Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
- Thread the yarn tail through the yarn needle. Insert the needle under the top loops of each stitch of the last round and pull tight to close the top of the hat.
- Fasten off and weave in any remaining loose ends.
