Crochet pattern – Skull granny square

Materials:

• Worsted weight yarn (color of your choice for the square, and black or a contrasting color for the skull)
• Crochet hook (size appropriate for your yarn)
• Yarn needle
• Scissors

Gauge: Gauge is not critical for this pattern.Pattern:Skull Motif: Note: The skull motif is worked in rounds.Starting with black or a contrasting color yarn:

1. Magic ring, or chain 4 and slip stitch in the first chain to form a ring.
2. Round 1: Chain 1, make 8 single crochet stitches into the ring. Pull the ring tight to close. (8 stitches)
3. Round 2: 2 single crochet stitches in the next stitch, 1 single crochet in the following stitch. Repeat from * to * around. (12 stitches)
4. Round 3: 2 single crochet stitches in the next stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * to * around. (16 stitches)
5. Rounds 4-6: Single crochet in each stitch around. (16 stitches)
6. Round 7: Single crochet 2 together, single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * to * around. (12 stitches)
7. Round 8: Single crochet in each stitch around. (12 stitches)
8. Stuff the skull lightly with fiberfill or stuffing material.
9. Round 9: Single crochet 2 together. Repeat from * to * around. (6 stitches)
10. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Granny Square:

1. Start with a magic ring, or chain 4 and slip stitch in the first chain to form a ring.
2. Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet), make 2 double crochet stitches into the ring. Chain 2, make 3 double crochet stitches into the ring. Repeat from * to * three more times. Chain 2 and slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3 to join. (4 clusters of 3 double crochet stitches)
3. Round 2: Slip stitch into the next 2 stitches and into the first chain-2 space. Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet), make 2 double crochet stitches in the same chain-2 space. Chain 1, make 3 double crochet stitches into the next chain-2 space. Chain 2, make 3 double crochet stitches in the same chain-2 space. Repeat from * to * three more times. Chain 1 and slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3 to join. (4 clusters of 3 double crochet stitches, 4 chain-1 spaces, and 4 chain-2 spaces)
