Materials:
Worsted weight yarn (color of your choice)
Crochet hook suitable for the yarn weight
Yarn needle
Scissors
Instructions:
Begin by creating a slip knot and chaining an even number of stitches. This will be the circumference of your hat’s brim. Join the last chain to the first chain with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet in each chain around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
Round 2: Chain 1, single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
Repeat Round 2 until your brim measures the desired width. This will give the brim some stretch.
Once the brim is the desired width, continue working in rounds without joining at the end of each round. You can use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
Rounds 1-4: Chain 2 (counts as a double crochet here and throughout), double crochet in each stitch around.
Rounds 5 onwards: Chain 2, skip the first stitch, double crochet in the next stitch, chain 1, skip the next stitch – repeat this pattern (double crochet, chain 1, skip) until the end of the round.
Continue repeating Round 5 until your hat reaches the desired length. You can make it as slouchy as you like by adding more rounds.
Once your hat is the desired length, fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the yarn tail through a yarn needle and weave it through the top loops of each stitch in the last round. Pull tight to close the top of the hat.
Finally, weave in any loose ends and trim excess yarn.
