Crocheting a thermal pocket shawl is a cozy and practical project. Here’s a basic pattern to get you started:
Materials you will need:
- Bulky weight or chunky yarn (approximately 400-500 grams)
- Crochet hook suitable for your yarn weight (check the yarn label for recommendations)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Pattern:
- Chain a multiple of 4 stitches plus 3 additional chains to create the desired width of your shawl. For example, you can chain 67 stitches for a smaller shawl or 91 stitches for a larger one.
- Row 1: Double crochet (dc) in the 4th chain from the hook. Dc in each chain across. (This will be the right side of the shawl.)
- Row 2: Chain 3 (counts as the first dc), turn your work. Skip the first dc, and front post double crochet (fpdc) around the next dc, dc in the next dc Repeat from * to * across until the last two stitches. Fpdc around the second-to-last dc, dc in the last dc.
- Repeat Row 2 for the desired length of your shawl. Make sure to end on a wrong side row. The length can vary depending on your preference, but a typical length is around 60-70 inches (150-180 cm).
- Pocket Openings: The next rows will create pockets on each end of the shawl.
- Pocket Row 1: Chain 3 (counts as the first dc), turn your work. Skip the first dc, and dc in each stitch across until the last 2 stitches.
- Pocket Row 2: Chain 3 (counts as the first dc), turn your work. Skip the first dc, and dc in each stitch across until the last 2 stitches.
- Repeat Pocket Row 2 for a total of 10-12 rows (or more if you prefer larger pockets).
- Border: To finish the shawl, you’ll add a border around all edges.
- Starting at the corner of the pocket opening, single crochet (sc) evenly along the edge of the shawl, making sure to work 3 sc stitches into each corner.
- When you reach the other pocket opening corner, continue to sc along the edge, working evenly until you reach the starting corner.
- Fasten off, weave in any loose ends, and trim excess yarn.
