Materials you’ll need:
Worsted weight yarn (or any yarn suitable for babies)
Knitting needles appropriate for the yarn weight (circular or double-pointed needles)
Scissors
Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Instructions:
Cast on 72 stitches.
Join the round if using circular needles, or divide the stitches evenly if using double-pointed needles.
Knit in the round in a knit 2, purl 2 ribbing pattern for approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm).
Switch to knitting in stockinette stitch (knit every round) until the hat measures approximately 4 inches (10 cm) from the cast-on edge.
Decrease rounds:
Round 1: Knit 6, knit 2 together – Repeat to the end of the round.
Round 2: Knit all stitches.
Round 3: Knit 5, knit 2 together – Repeat to the end of the round.
Round 4: Knit all stitches.
Round 5: Knit 4, knit 2 together – Repeat to the end of the round.
Round 6: Knit all stitches.
Round 7: Knit 3, knit 2 together – Repeat to the end of the round.
Round 8: Knit all stitches.
Round 9: Knit 2, knit 2 together – Repeat to the end of the round.
Round 10: Knit all stitches.
Round 11: Knit 1, knit 2 together – Repeat to the end of the round.
Round 12: Knit all stitches.
Round 13: Knit 2 together – Repeat to the end of the round.
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the yarn needle and slip the needle through the remaining stitches, removing them from the knitting needles. Pull tight to close the top of the hat.
Weave in any loose ends using the yarn needle.
