Pattern:
Note: This pattern is for an adult-sized hat. You can adjust the size by using different yarn weights and hook sizes.
Step 1: Starting with a magic circle, make 10 single crochet (sc) stitches into the circle. Pull the tail to tighten the circle.
Alternatively, you can make a chain of 4 or 5 stitches and then join it into a circle with a slip stitch. Then work the single crochets into the center of the circle.
Step 2: Mark the beginning of the round with a stitch marker if desired. This will help you keep track of your rounds.
Step 3: Work in continuous rounds without joining or turning. Place a marker at the first stitch of each new round to keep track of your progress.
Step 4: For the next round, make two single crochet stitches into each stitch around (20 stitches in total).
Step 5: Continue working in rounds, making one single crochet stitch in each stitch for the next several rounds until the hat reaches the desired length. Try it on occasionally to ensure it fits snugly but comfortably.
Step 6: Decrease rounds – Start decreasing the stitches to shape the crown of the hat. You can do this by skipping every nth stitch (e.g., skip one stitch, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat). The exact decrease pattern will depend on the size and fit you desire for the hat.
Step 7: When you have reduced the stitches to a small enough opening, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the yarn needle, and weave it through the remaining stitches. Pull tight to close the top of the hat.
Step 8: Fasten off and weave in any remaining loose ends with the yarn needle.
