Handknitted Cardigan Pattern

Materials you’ll need:

  1. Knitting needles (size will depend on your yarn and desired gauge)
  2. Worsted weight or bulky yarn (amount will depend on your size and desired length)
  3. Scissors
  4. Tapestry needle
  5. Buttons or other closures (optional)

Note: This pattern assumes you have basic knitting knowledge, including casting on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, and binding off.

Step 1: Gauge and Measurements Start by creating a gauge swatch using your chosen yarn and needles. This will help determine the number of stitches and rows needed to achieve the desired size and fit. Measure your chest circumference, arm length, and desired cardigan length to guide your sizing decisions.

Step 2: Back Panel Begin by casting on the desired number of stitches for the back panel. The width of the panel will depend on your gauge and measurements.

Work in your chosen stitch pattern (e.g., stockinette stitch, garter stitch, or a pattern of your choice) until the back panel reaches the desired length, ending with a wrong side row.

Step 3: Front Panels Create two identical front panels that will cover each side of your chest. The width of each panel will depend on your desired fit.

For the front panels, you can follow the same stitch pattern as the back panel or introduce any desired variations. Consider adding a button band or other decorative elements if desired.

Shape the neckline and armholes by decreasing stitches gradually along the edges. This can be achieved by working decreases or binding off stitches. Refer to your gauge and measurements to determine the shaping details.

Step 4: Sleeves Knit two sleeves separately. Start by casting on the desired number of stitches for the cuffs, taking your gauge and measurements into account.

Work in your chosen stitch pattern, increasing stitches gradually throughout the rows to form the sleeve shape. Continue knitting until the sleeve reaches the desired length, ending with a wrong side row.

Step 5: Assembly Once all the individual pieces are complete, it’s time to assemble the cardigan. Lay the back panel flat and attach the front panels to each side, matching the shoulders and sides. Seam the pieces together using a tapestry needle and yarn.

Next, attach the sleeves to the armholes of the front and back panels. Seam them in place, making sure the stitch pattern aligns with the body of the cardigan.

Step 6: Finishing Touches To complete your handknitted cardigan, weave in any loose ends using a tapestry needle. You can add buttons, clasps, or other closures along the front opening if desired.
