Step 1: Creating a foundation chain
Start by creating a foundation chain of a length that fits comfortably around your head. It should be a multiple of 3, plus 2 extra chains. For example, if your head circumference is 22 inches, you can make a chain of 68 (22 x 3 + 2) stitches.
Step 2: Joining the round
After creating the foundation chain, join the last chain to the first chain with a slip stitch to form a circle. Be careful not to twist the chain.
Step 3: Working the body of the hat
Round 1: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch), and single crochet in each chain around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. (68 stitches)
Rounds 2-10: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. (68 stitches)
Step 4: Shaping the slouchy part
Rounds 11-20: Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), skip the next 2 stitches, (double crochet, chain 1, double crochet) in the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain-3.
Step 5: Finishing the hat
Round 21: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch and chain-1 space around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. (68 stitches)
Round 22: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. (68 stitches)
Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Weave in any loose ends using a yarn needle.
