Materials:

Worsted weight yarn in main color (MC)
Contrasting color worsted weight yarn (CC)
Crochet hook suitable for the yarn weight
Yarn needle
Scissors

ch: chain
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet

Instructions:

Ribbing:
Using MC, make a foundation chain that fits comfortably around the head circumference. The length of the chain should be divisible by 2. Add 2 additional chains.
Row 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 sc in each chain across. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as the first hdc), work 1 hdc in each st across. Turn.

Repeat Row 2 until the ribbing measures approximately 2 inches (5 cm) in length. Fasten off MC.

Main Body:
Join CC at the last stitch of the ribbing.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each stitch around the ribbing, making sure to work through both loops of each stitch. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, work 1 hdc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st to the first hdc.

Rounds 3-5: Repeat Round 2.

Switch back to MC.

Rounds 6-7: Repeat Round 2.

Switch back to CC.

Rounds 8-10: Repeat Round 2.

Repeat Rounds 6-10 until the hat reaches the desired length, ending with a CC round. Adjust the number of rounds as needed for the desired height.

Decreasing:
Switch to MC.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 1 hdc in the next 4 stitches, hdc2tog (half double crochet two together) over the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first hdc. (Total number of stitches should be divisible by 2)

Round 2: Ch 1, work 1 hdc in the next 3 stitches, hdc2tog over the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first hdc.

Round 3: Ch 1, work 1 hdc in the next 2 stitches, hdc2tog over the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first hdc.

Round 4: Ch 1, work 1 hdc in the next stitch, hdc2tog over the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first hdc.

Round 5: Ch 1, hdc2tog over each pair of stitches around. Join with a sl st to the first hdc.

Finishing:
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the yarn needle with the tail and weave it through the front loops of the remaining stitches. Pull tight to close the top of the hat.
Weave in any loose ends using the yarn needle.
